Show me the path where I should walk, O Lord

weaving in your marriage
It seems the new routine is an occasional post. I don’t desire to end this blog like I have for other things (especially due to the occasional interest in having an ‘outlet’) but there’s certainly a lessened interest most of the times. Anyway…
As of late we’ve been part of a marriage small group with our church family… it’s been great and involved a lot of really thoughtful and diverse discussion. I’m the ‘apprentice’/assistant and that means occasionally I get to ‘lead’/facilate discussion. Yesterday was the first and the topic already identified was Weaving. It’s part 3 (with part 1 being Leaving, and part 2 being Cleaving). The best part of the night wasn’t anything I had written unfortunately – it was the discussion. Alas, I don’t take notes well for that sort of thing… but I leave you with my entire plans for discussion if for some reason this would be of value to someone.
a call for growth
Ah what timing to read this from Hebrews 5 today:
There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.
Tim wrote yesterday about When Good Men Ask Good Questions, and my response to the question of “Why aren’t the people of God … being the people of God?” … I think it’s because enough are still needing “milk”. You wonder why pastors are out of breath and tired – could it because they are teaching the basic things over again to believers that aren’t new? As I write this, I feel like this can completely go down what I perceive to be a wrong path in condemning a lot of Christianity so I’ll try not to because I’m not sure that will be very helpful. What I want this to be is a call for spiritual growth.
What does this mean for each of us? I’ve no clue. I don’t consider it to mean doing everything the traditional church considers necessary, but let us be guided by God, His Spirit and the Bible in our works. From Ephesians 4:
As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when you were called— 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27and do not give the devil a foothold. He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
everything sad going to come untrue
I’ve got this sadness in me lately thinking about church… if you couldn’t tell from the prior post.
But I’ve got to have some hope on this. I pray that there will be change. Then today I read something from this other city church in Richmond that really has no tie-in with his interpretation, but just made me think about it.
what’s up with the church?
Where’s the fellowship? Being led by God in awe-inspiring ways? Depth? Just a lot of stuff it seems that I’ve heard about from a few different people as of late. Some aspects within my own church but just as much elsewhere.
NOTE: I’m more than aware that since the church involves people, and we people are broken, and unlike God, screw things up a lot, we will do that to the church as well. Read the rest of this entry »
Rva Worship 2010?
Been thinking this for awhile and wonder if anyone else has as well. I totally dig having a church family, and this isn’t about that at all.
A gathering of believers across Richmond – worshipping together. All churches represented. Every community. Praising Him as His bride; His church. I’ve no interest in denominational differences or if you even belong to a ‘church’. Come one, come all. Church worship rock bands, hymns sung by groups, individuals pouring their hearts out in praise, anyone. Well-known songs, or your own. I totally do NOT think it should be held at a ‘church’ building (sorry Scott); it has to be at someplace *different* – maybe a park or somewhere public. I know there’s regulations and laws and what-not so who knows. I’m no event planner so it’s not as if I’m going to pull this off.
The song that really gets me pumped every time I hear it is this (with the lyrics below):
Did you feel the mountains tremble?
Did you hear the oceans roar?
When the people rose to sing of Jesus Christ the risen one
Did you feel the people tremble?
Did you hear the singers roar?
When the lost began to sing of Jesus Christ the risen one
And we can see that God you’re moving
A mighty river through the nations
And young and old will turn to Jesus
Fling wide your heavenly gates
Prepare the way of the risen Lord
Open up the doors and let the music play
Let the streets resound with singing
Songs that bring your hope
Songs that bring your joy
Dancers who dance upon injustice
Did you feel the darkness tremble?
When all the saints join in one song
And all the streams flow as one river
To wash away our brokeness
And here we see that God you’re moving
A time of Jubilee is coming
When young and old return to Jesus
Fling wide your heavenly gates
Prepare the way of the risen Lord!
I could tie this in to some other posts I’ve read somewhat recently that have been simmering a bit in my head, including:
the trans-congregational church
I think that Kloha has pointed out something that may be missing among the church today. The church has become so exclusive and independent that we often miss the fact that we are united with other brothers and sisters in Christ as well – not only with the ones that meet with us from day-to-day or week-to-week.
… the success of the Nehemiah strategy will require that “all these players lay down their logos and their egos and embrace the city together. If we continue to work in isolation from each other, we will continue to be impotent. What emerges out of unity is clarity of purpose. What unites very different kinds of leaders is a passion to unite the church across denominational lines, serve the poor, reconcile the races, and take the whole Gospel to the whole city.”
“If Christianity was only about finding a group of people to live life with, who shared openly their search for God and allowed anyone, regardless of behavior, to seek too, and who collectively lived by faith to make the world a little more like heaven, would you be interested?…What people are asking for is the kingdom of God made tangible.”
“Church must not be the goal of the gospel anymore. Church should not be the focus of our efforts or the banner we hold up to explain what we’re about. Church should be what ends up happening as a natural response to people wanting to follow us, be with us, and be like us as we are following the way of Christ.”
