Show me the path where I should walk, O Lord

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. I trust in You, my God! Show me the path where I should walk, O Lord Point out the right road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me for You are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in You. Remember O Lord your unfailing love and compassion which you have shown from long ages past. Forgive the rebellious sins of my youth…

asleep

I’m tired of repeating my sins, continuing to return to them.  I see the need to change, and pray for my Lord to change them, but am I committed to this? These are long-running things that I in some way, hope will just go away…. I’m delaying, running and hiding. Please Jesus give me a willing heart to want to change and then mold me. You’ve done it before and I know you can again … so help me to get over the hurdles I’ve put up.

praise

pict00262When you think of songs at church, what do you think of? Do you think of something intended to modern and ‘hip’? Something that everyone will like? Are the songs sung for your edification? For a few years, I used to believe this was the case. Then we went to a mid-week church service our church did every few months where a few songs really struck me down from holding this belief. It’s not at all about me. When they say worship or praise, that is what it is supposed to be – worshipping and praising God – but not just me doing it – but the entire church.

So I get that now. But it doesn’t seem to still happen all that often, at least for me. Don’t know why. Then a week or so ago I read this post called Let’s Party! which made me wonder and really want to praise God like that:

… the party with the singing and dancing was strangely worshipful. I’m not exactly sure why, but there were numerous times during the party when I almost broke down in tears over the emotion being expressed in the singing and dancing. I asked one of them what they were singing (most of it was in Hebrew or Yiddish) and he said, “The Psalms.”

I want to be touched deep, to feel sincere emotion and praise God through song. The closeness to God experienced through heart-felt singing praise is something I remember. I don’t know if I always want the best done ’service’ (it’s entertaining but in this day and age, that itself can be boring …) I just want to praise God during this time. Now I’m not calling out completely how it is currently done, but wondering about occasionally it being different. Like what? Not sure – maybe some guy/gal (or a few…?) who want to sing not an entire song but just the chorus – over and over – or a simple and very easy to follow and repeat song like this:

Maybe even put the words up like is usually done (especially for the song above).

I’ve so far been talking about on Sunday gatherings, but why not anywhere – anytime? It sure seems we usually say a prayer whenever we all get together in some sort of small groups, so why not sing a song of praise to God? Why not give thanks? Regardless if we can sing well – I know I can’t. I have thought in particular in times and places where stopping to sing praises to God would (well in my mind I could be completely off-base and flat-out wrong) definitely be different – in going out and share clothes, blankets, shoes, food, etc. with the homeless. Why not come, setup and make available what we have, and then sing songs? Praise God! Give glory to Him not us!

Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because He’s given
Jesus Christ His Son.

And now let the weak say “I am strong.”
Let the poor say “I am rich.”
Because of what the Lord has done for us
Give thanks.

do not interfere with God

READING: 2 Chronicles 35

Imagine this. You’re 8 years old and become King of Judah. Your father and your grandfather both both did all kinds of evil stuff, but hey you’re only 8, so I doubt you really know that. You’re great-grandfather well he was different, but you probably don’t hear about him that much… but out of seemingly nowhere, you decide to follow the God of your ancestors and not what your father and grandfather did. You actually go about destroying all that they worshipped, probably because some have told you how it used to be many years ago. Then one day your high priest comes along and says he found the Book of the Law! Boy you didn’t have any idea! You reform the land, putting back in place all that was intended, and the people follow. All is good!

Then one day you find the King from one side traveling through your land. You probably don’t have a clue what’s going on, so you go over ready to fight, just in case. And he says, “What do we have against each other, O King of Judah? I haven’t come to fight against you but against the country with whom I’m at war. God commanded me to hurry, so don’t get in my way; you’ll only interfere with God, who is on my side in this, and he’ll destroy you.” Hmm. You’re not really sure about that. And hey he doesn’t even believe in our God, so how could he be part of God’s larger plan? So you decide that – we are going to battle. And then you up and get shot by an arrow and die.

Maybe God can speak through others (even to believers), even if they don’t know Him.

free will

I read this in Mere Christianity and thought it explained this concept pretty well:

Everyone who believes in God at all believes that He knows what you and I are going to do tomorrow. But if He knows I am going to do so-and-so, how can I be free to do otherwise? Well, here once again, the difficulty comes from thinking that God is progressing along the Time-line like us: the only difference being that He can see ahead and we cannot. Well, if that were true, if God foresaw our acts, it would be very hard to understand how we could be free not to do them. But suppose God is outside and above the Time-line. In that case, what we call ‘tomorrow’ is visible to Him in just the same way as what we call ‘today’. All the days are ‘Now’ for Him. He does not remember you doing things yesterday; He simply sees you doing them: because, though you have lost yesterday, He has not. He does not ‘foresee’ you doing things tomorrow; He simply sees you doing them; bcause though tomorrow is not yet there for you, it is for Him. You never supposed that your actions at this moment were any less free because God knows what you are doing. Well, He knows your tomorrow’s actions in just the same way – because He is already in tomorrow and can simply watch you. In a sense, He does not know your action till you have done it: but then the moment at which you have done it is already ‘Now’ for Him.

teaching a man to fish

“When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them…. When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting.

I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get.Matthew 6

I personally think some things should be out in the open – like content about church sermons, and quite possibly certain aspects of our lives (this blog is kind of a diary for me in some ways). But not everything should be out in the open… some should be “in secret”. Jesus identifies three in the Sermon on the Mount, but we are only going to focus on one for this post – our “private time” with God. That means prayer.

Oh by the way – this is excerpted, paraphrased and generally taken from my church’s gathering today (9/30/07), sermon is “Part 2: Encouraging a Secret Life” which is part of the “In the Closet…” series.
