marriage disagreements…
A week ago, we had the chance to get away from the kids for a night. We already had plans to take part in a Couples’ Café (the primary purpose of this post), and then afterwards we picked up some Chipotle dinner since it seemed everything we really wanted around the area was already closed at a little past 10pm. marriage, viewpoint from 6 years
Marriage. It’s one of those journeys you never really know were you’re going to be at next. There sure are some dips and some serious turns and a LOT of stuff you don’t expect. It seems if you’re like me you can try to plan it all you want, but it doesn’t always work out like you expect. A lot of times this is usually BETTER than anything I could plan on anyway. It’s a real joining of two people – and a strengthening of each other FOREVER. I find it sad though because it seems that frequently I have seen workshops about divorce recovery but not so much on marriage strengthening…
But marriage sure needs it. If you’re married, you know it is NOT easy, it is NOT simple, and it DOES require a lot of understanding, patience and determination. I find it very easy to get myself in a mess through not talking, or putting other things ahead of my wife. I don’t always feel like doing a lot of things, but what I have lately begun to realize, it’s not all about her and it’s certainly not always about how I “feel”. It can and should be so much deeper than that and when it is, everything in life is simply magnitudes better than ever before. I find it really hard to explain, but know Paul Newman really got it when he said “Why would I go out for a hamburger when I have steak at home?”
By the way, the picture to the right is from 7 years ago (almost a year before we were married). Read the rest of this entry »
Ukrop’s Golden Gift program

Ukrop’s has a really nifty charity program right now called the Golden Gift Program. Heard about it? They collect points for your shopping between Feb 4 and March 29 and the charity can receive a portion of the $400,000 they have set aside for charities. There’s nothing you have to do if you already shop at Ukrop’s (that is of course assumes you have a UVC card with them).
If you shop at Ukrop’s, do you know which charity you’ll donate your points to? There’s a lot of charities registered (search for them here). If you don’t know of any in particular, and care for me to recommend one, I will:
Peace In The Home – it’s a family ministry/organization that is dedicated to strengthening marriages and families. To find out more about Peace In The Home, check out the web site. If you would be interested, drop me a line (email/comment) and I can remind you in April as the time approaches…
do you know “Peace in the Home”?
I can say that (at least right now), my family knows “peace in the home” both in a actual-family peace but also the new ministry organization that just so happens to be called “Peace in the Home”.

A little background – we are friends with the couple that are starting this organization = Robert and Melissa Partington. We met them at Grace Brethren Church (in Midlothian off Cranbeck Rd) and joined a small group on the topic of marriage. I’ve written previously about them or some of the stuff we talked about (“marriage”, and “visited a Berry Farm today with the Partingtons”), but it was some interesting times. Several in the group came and went (which just happens), and several (including us and the Partingtons) changed churches.
I’ve been a little involved in helping with their website and just yesterday it went live. Check it out.
So what exactly is “Peace in the Home”? Please go over there to read that. In my words – they aim to take us where we are and help bring us to another level with regards to our marriages, our families, and our parenting. We all have things we struggle with in these areas, don’t we? But many a time this isn’t directly handles, especially in church. I’m not talking about your pastor just doing a sermon (or even a series) on it – but actually something hands-on that couples and families can do something with. They exist to serve in that role. It doesn’t have to be through a church – that’s just the one that comes to my mind. They hold workshops, seminars, marriage retreats; they provide counseling and encouragement.
Check ‘em out. I’m not fully involved in their organization (I just assist with tech stuff), so I can’t say if they are looking for churches to possibly plug into and get involved with, but if you think you might be interested, contact them!
Peace in the Home’s ministry springs from Psalm 128:
Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD who walks in his ways!
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house;
Your children will be like olive shoots around your table.
Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the LORD.
