OK, so this is a riff on 101 Dirt Cheap Ways to Enjoy Yourself but localized. I kept some, removed some (even thought some I agree with…), added some:

  1. Check out a book or movies from the library and read/watch the afternoon away.
  2. Picnic at Maymont.
  3. Bake and eat homemade cookies.
  4. Start a blog.
  5. Hike outdoors and explore somewhere near like Belle Isle.
  6. Head anywhere with someone and a digital camera or two.  Shoot as many funny and interesting photos as you can.  Then go home and sort through them all.
  7. join the Chesterfield or Richmond Freecycle communities and find old stuff in your attic, and offer them on the list. While you’re there try to be quick and reply on other odd offers of stuff that people don’t want… all for free!
  8. Play old-school board games like Monopoly and Scrabble.
  9. Brew a fresh pot of coffee (or tea) and share it with someone over an interesting conversation.
  10. Learn to play guitar (or any musical instrument like a piano) online.
  11. Go swimming at a local pool or in the James River.
  12. Fly a kite.
  13. Host a long night of $10 Texas Hold’em Poker with 9 of your friends.  Make sure you understand poker odds.

  27. Make your own ice cream!
  28. Massage her feet if she promises to massage yours.  ;-)
  29. Go canoeing or kayaking (we just was graciously given a canoe – thanks Barb and Georg!, but what local place has cheap rentals?).
  30. Sit riverside (I like Pony Pasture) and skip rocks across the water.
  31. Go tubing down the river.

  1. I lived in Richmond from 1986-1990 (6th through 9th grades). I haven’t been there to visit since 1996. I still miss it. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

  2. Great post…I’ll be sure to check this out when I need some ideas 🙂

  3. This is a good idea. I think I may do it for my home town.
